Paradise Duck

Gamebird Species:

The Paradise duck is New Zealand's biggest bird shooting attraction. Nicknamed the parry it is halfway between a goose and mallard duck in size. Both male and female are a beautiful colour, and are often sought after by overseas hunters. It decoys well and travels in large flocks. In the South Island our guides are Brendan Matthews, James Gray, or Steve Dougherty and in the North Island Ray Potroz.

Canada Goose

A massive bird, the New Zealand Canada goose is the largest sub-species in the world. It decoys well as this photo shows. There are over 100 geese in this pile and all were shot on one very memorable morning for three American hunters. Brendan Matthews, James Gray, or Steve Dougherty are our guides. There is a special season in the South Island during the months February and March and large numbers are shot at this time.

 Duck

New Zealand has a lot of ducks. Ducks on the game bird licence are mallard, grey, and shoveller. The mallard is our main duck species and daily bird bag limits are high. In the Central South Island district 50 ducks a day may be shot. All our guides offer decoy/hide hunts or jump shooting of creeks and waterways. Seasons and bag limit sizes vary between provinces, with the most generous being 50 birds a day in Central South Island. Other duck species that may be hunted are Grey and Shoveller.

Swan:

White Geese:

Pigeon

These bird species are our bonus birds for those rest periods between duck and geese hunting. The black swan came here from Australia, while white feral geese and rock pigeon are derived from domestic flocks that escaped into the wild. Pigeon flocks can number in their hundreds. James Gray and Brendan Matthews are adept in hunting these species, and their "patch" the Central South Island has plenty of these birds. Pigeon hunts target crop destroying flocks, and over a day the harvest may top the 100 bird mark.

Pheasant

Quail:

Turkey

Peacock

These bird species constitute New Zealand's upland game bird species. Quail coveys are free range, while pheasants are hunted on preserves. Turkeys are a real bonus. See Turkey Hunting for details. No licence, no limit, and big gobbler toms. Some turkey properties have populations numbering in the hundreds. The turkeys are all Merriam. Our top upland gamebird guides are Brendan Matthews and James Gray who both do a top job. In the North Island guide Ray Potroz  hunts turkey, and wild peacock. The wild peacock is a great addition to any bird hunting trip, and finding them is the key to success.

Small Game

Hares, opossums, rabbits, and wallaby may also be hunted. These species are viewed as pests so require no specific documentation to hunt. They may be hunted during the day and the night, and there is no limit on the numbers that may be shot. Hares like this pair are often encountered while hunting upland game birds, or big game hunting.
