Bird Hunting |
A short plane trip from Auckland International Airport lands visitors at the region’s chief city New Plymouth. The fertile Taranaki plains are home to flocks of waterfowl, scattered groups of upland game birds, and introduced big game species such as pigs, goats, and bulls. During the main duck season (May/June) hunters may attempt to meet daily bag limits on mallard, grey, and shoveller duck, paradise shelduck, and pukeko. A successful day could see a hunter netting as many as twenty-five birds of mixed species. Potroz also has access to one of the few wild populations of peacocks in New Zealand. |

Turkey: Peacock |
On rolling hill country, peacock are located using binoculars, and then the hunter must stalk within shotgun range if he is to be lucky. They flush, and fly to safety at the merest hint of danger, and will go to ground for days after being disturbed. It is a great sight to see two or three cock birds flushing in front of you. The turkey flocks are much more tolerant, are in good numbers and the chances of securing a trophy Merriam tom are very high. : see Turkey Hunting. The best time for peacock and turkey hunting (not moulting) is October to December but the waterfowl season is closed at this time. |

Birds: Birds: Birds |
A licence is not required to hunt peacocks and turkey. Small game, wild bull, wild pig and fallow deer hunting is also available. Mallard duck is the predominant game species, accounting for around 60% of all waterfowl harvested. Paradise shelduck are widespread throughout the region and they make up about 30% of the waterfowl harvest. International hunters rate them as our number one game bird because of their beauty, their willingness to decoy easily, and their indigenous tag, which gives them collector status. Pukeko, a large coot like bird, are also widespread through the region and make for great find and flush hunting. |

Personal Touch |
Potroz likes to personally guide each group that books with him. For this reason a group should not consist of more than three. While he is happy to “still hunt” for waterfowl his wide range of farmer contacts means he prefers to move his clients around, indulging in “hit and run” raids on numerous properties chasing a diverse range of game bird species. He is a skilled bow hunter himself so is happy to take bow hunter bookings from clients wishing to target turkeys, peacock, big game, and small game. |
