Follow The Birds

As a big game hunting outfitter, Matthews hunts birds on the same properties he often hunts free-range big game. Many of these areas are in the high country and the scenery, and game populations are amazing. Mountains, vast valley basins, wide river flats, big game, and large flocks of feeding geese and duck are the scenario that greets the client. Depending on where the gamebirds are feeding, clients may either base themselves in Waimate or Tekapo. Accommodation is comfortable, food is home prepared, and groups share rooms.

Start Early

Early morning hunts are often the most successful as bird flocks flight in to feed. If left undisturbed the birds would feed and loaf for most of the day, before flighting out to safe refuges in the evening. Matthews' techniques are to arrive well in advance of the first bird mobs, set out extensive decoy spreads, call loudly, and pick off incoming birds as they arrive. His automatic tape goose calls are particularly effective and have resulted in hunters achieving large bags.

Trophy Hunts

Matthews bread and butter hunts are big game trophy hunts. He is one of New Zealand's most experienced hunting outfitters, and week in and out puts clients on to amazing red stag, fallow buck, elk bulls, buck chamois, arapawa rams, billy goats, and majestic bull tahr. In recent times his pig dogs have come good, and clients can either hunt boar the kiwi way, or ambush them on his ranch. In 2009 he and his clients harvested over 200 wild pigs including a dozen boars that bettered 200 pounds in gutted weight.
